An interview with Sajid Nadiadwala
His family can easily be called one of the veterans in the trade. And he is the successful heir to hold the flag high for Nadiadwala Grandson and Entertainment. With a host of hits behind him, producer Sajid Nadiadwala is ready with one of the biggest and most anticipated films of not only his flourishing career but also one of the most awaited films of the year. As Nadiadwala gears up for his Hollywood-Bollywood multistarrer KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, he speaks to our correspondent on the film, Akshay Kumar, Sylvester Stallone and more.
This is one of the most awaited films this year and you must be excited?
Certainly, there is a great amount of excitement as the film nears its release. It is one of the biggest...probably the biggest film of my career and besides excitement there is a lot of expectations too attached with this film.
Certainly, it has some of the biggest Hollywood stars.
And some big Bollywood stars too. Akshay (Kumar) and Kareena (Kapoor), you cannot ignore them because KAMBAKKHT ISHQ has Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh. (Laughs). But certainly it is a dream come true for me that I have managed to rope in so many of them.
It must have been a great deal of hard work roping them in?
I won't say it was difficult but certainly we had to work a lot on it. As a producer I go all out to get the best for my film. It's the job of the scriptwriter to write but that doesn't mean my responsibility ends with financing the project. A producer has to be passionate about the project...the story and the cast... and I am one of those passionate people. When the script was written it had Hollywood at its backdrop and I was focused from the beginning that I need to rope in some of the biggest stars to give the film the required look and script the required strength.
After all, it must have been a great experience working with Sylvester Stallone.
(Pauses) Not only him but also with Denise and Brandon. Both are big and they need no introduction. But this experience is very hard to describe. This is what happens when you come across stars like them. There's a difference between 'growing up with stars' and growing up on stars'. I have grown up with stars. Many of the actors who have worked with me have been my friends, either in school or in college or even after that. Salman was my school friend and so on. But for that case Sylvester Stallone was my childhood idol...my rooms were full of his posters on the wall. I have grown up on Stallone and Denise Richards. That is where the difference lies.
So what was it that you said to Stallone when you met him for the first time?
(Laughs...and laughs). To be true and very honest...for the first few minutes I could not understand what to do. I stood there like a fan and didn't know what to do - ''Whether to sign for contract first or get his autograph first''.
Was it a conscious idea to make a film with Hollywood stars or it just happened?
These things don't happen just by chance. It's the story of a Hollywood stuntman played by Akshay and Kareena plays a top model. It's a romantic comedy set in Hollywood and we have shot almost the entire film in Universal Studios, Hollywood. We could have easily set Bollywood as the backdrop but I wanted to give the audience something that would be new and fresh. And that's how the entire project rolled out.
So, how big is the role of these actors or are they only cameos?
It's not at all special appearances or cameos. Denise has a full-fledged role, as she plays one of the love interests in Akshay's life. It's a love triangle between Akshay-Kareena-Denise. Stallone too has a lot of action scenes and some of the best dialogues in the film and Brandon was just superb. You need to watch the film to see them what they do.
Given that it's a big film and involves a lot of money why did you vest the responsibility on a newcomer director Sabbir Khan.
I have no problems with that. He has worked as an assistant director earlier and was great at his job. I have given opportunities to others too earlier. Sajid (Khan) was also a newcomer and he gave one of the biggest hits of the year with HEYY BABYY. JAAN-E-MAAN too was by newcomer Sirish Kunder.
Apparently, in fact you have also signed director Siddharth Anand for your next production.
(Smiles) Yes and I have full faith in him. His contract with Yash Raj is over and now he is directing one for me. In fact Sajid's next film HOUSEFULL too is about to begin and that too has a very interesting script.
But don't you think that with the on going problem between multiplexes and film producers the film might suffer?
See, I am one of those who are actively involved into this entire issue. I am standing by all my colleagues during this time. I support the entire decision of the producers. But at the same I am hopeful that it will be sorted out very soon. We have booked a May 29 release date and this issue will be sorted out much before that. It's all because of this present economic situation that such problems have crept up. So long people were happily paying the price of the tickets. Everyone is in a mood to save money for the future because it's uncertain. (Laughs). But I am sure it will get sorted out long before that.

Hasselhoff's alcohol-poisoning reports were exaggerated, say reps
David Hasselhoff's reps have said that the reports suggesting that the former 'Baywatch' hunk's was hospitalised on May 2 because he was suffering from alcohol-poisoning were exaggerated.
According to RadarOnline.com, Hasselhoff, 56, was found unconscious and foaming at the mouth on May 2 with a .39 blood alcohol level, a sign of alcohol poisoning, when his daughter Hayley discovered him and rushed him to the hospital.
However, the actor's lawyers told TMZ that the story had been exaggerated, blaming Hasselhoff's ex-wife Pamela Bach for the drama.
"She is in violation of the court's order precluding contacting the media regarding her ex husband," the New York Daily News quoted the rep as saying.
According to the rep, the actor, who had been feeling ill, had been drinking when he got into an argument with Hayley, and he reportedly walked himself to his car and was driven to the hospital.
The actor was released from hospital on May 4.
His spokeswoman said that he was "fine and well and happy".
His lawyers later released a statement to "Extra", saying that the actor was "disturbed and saddened by the fact that a certain individual is disseminating grossly inaccurate stories about him to the press for ulterior motives."Tuesday, May 05, 2009 | 0 Comments

An interview with Preity Zinta
She no longer wants to be called 'Bubbly'...says, 'I have long passed that age'. We talk to Preity Zinta on the current agendas of her life.
Films, IPL, sponsoring 34 poor girls...is that what you call 'branching out'?
(Smiles) I have always lived life the way I wanted and always do things that are different and excite me. Yes, in your words, I am really branching out because I am loving it.
Your fans are really disappointed that they see so few Preity Zinta films these days. Have you become more selective about your films or you are running short of time with multi-tasking?
I have always been choosy about my roles and have become more so now. I have been in Bollywood for over 10 years and now I don't want to play a college girl or run and dance around trees any more because I have done it so many times. Now I look for something more challenging and refreshing. Something intense like Deepa Mehta's VIDESH, where for the first time I could feel the pain of domestic violence victims. Or the hot mujra I am doing in MAIN AUR MRS KHANNA starring Salman and Kareena...I haven't done a masala film for long, so this one was pretty refreshing.
Do you still enjoy the 'Bubbly' tag?
Honestly speaking, I never enjoyed it when people said -'She is so bubbly'. I mean, there was and is more to my character than that. As of now I am passed that age to even listen to such mindless compliments.
You are actually talking about ageing?
Why not? I have never tried to hide my age like other heroines.
What about winning the IPL this time?
I am keeping my fingers crossed. I neither borrowed money nor got Kings XI Punjab as a gift...I wanted to invest my earnings into something extraordinary and now my team is my second family. All of us are stretching ourselves to the maximum. The rest is destiny.
This time fellow actor Shilpa Shetty has also joined you and Shah Rukh. Comment.
Watch the matches...(laughs aloud).
Why did you suddenly decide to sponsor 34 girls?
It was not 'suddenly'. I always wanted to do something for poor children, especially girls, and what can be better than giving them proper education, good food and clothing. These 34 kids are born power girls. Just wait for some 10-15 years and see how they shape up!

Good News Around the Corner?
Good news seems to be just around the corner. According to reports, the ongoing tussle between the producers' body and the multiplex owners may be finally heading towards some kind of a resolution.
The scene at the box office has been very dismal with most single theatres and multiplexes going empty. The multiplexes tried to beat the strike by screening regional fare, which wasn't exactly lapped up by the audiences. Except for a Mee Shivajiraje Bhosle Boltoy, none of the films could light up a fire. With Hollywood producers too jumping into the fray and joining hands with the producers' body, the scene has indeed been miserable. The strategy of re releases too hasn't worked any magic at the box office. It has been five weeks since any major Bollywood movie released at the multiplexes, and it's been five weeks too long. The audiences are fed up, the summer vacations are on and it is high time that the rift is mended. There is pressure on both sides to resolve the mess fast with the film 99 all set to release this Friday, in defiance of the stir. If the two warring factions come to some kind of an agreement, it should be a matter of few weeks when it will be party time again at all the theatres in the city.

Janet Jackson's infamous Nipplegate goes back to court
Singer Janet Jackson's exposed-breast saga was back in court Monday, when the US Supreme Court ordered a lower court to reconsider its decision to throw out a fine against CBS in the matter.
The saga began when Janet Jackson's breast was exposed during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show when fellow entertainer Justin Timberlake pulled down her bustier as part of a dance routine.
Both performers called the event a 'wardrobe malfunction'. Jackson's breast was visible for just 9/10ths of a second, but prompted thousands of complaints from viewers.
The Supreme Court said the review was necessary after it ruled last week that the broadcast watchdog, the Federal Communications Commission, could sanction TV stations for even the one-time use of expletives.
The US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit in Philadelphia had previously dismissed the FCC's fine against CBS on the grounds that Jackson's exposure was so brief that it fell under the FCC's own policy exempting isolated material from indecency sanctions.
The FCC subsequently changed its policy to cover even fleeting obscenities. In its ruling last week, the Supreme Court said the FCC had been 'entirely rational' in doing so, even though it declined to rule on whether the ban violated the broadcasters' constitutional rights.
In a statement, CBS said the Supreme Court's decision was not a surprise given last week's ruling. The network said it was confident that the court will again find the incident was not and could not have been anticipated by the network.

Celina Jaitley denied entry in dad's Bangkok pub
Bollywood actress Celina Jaitley was denied entry in a Bangkok pub and restaurant owned by her dad, courtesy the short school uniform which she was wearing.
The guards not only failed to recognise her but also suspected her to be underage and stopped her from going inside.
Celina was shooting for 'Paying Guest' in Bangkok and one of the sequences required her along with the other leading ladies Neha Dhupia, Riya Sen and Sayali Bhagat to be dressed in a school uniform.
Why did she choose to hop over to the pub dressed like that?
'First and foremost I had no clue that guards would stop me at the gate. Also, I was in the middle of a sequence and didn't feel like getting in and out of costumes. I was anyways enjoying myself in a school dress and though it may have scandalised quite a few out there, I didn't mind that at all,' Celina told IANS.
'In the first place, it was anyway quite funny to be dressed in a tight white shirt, red and black short skirt, hair band, white socks and black shoes. And then this incident happened where I was denied entry in my own pub. It was as funny as it could have got,' she added.
Celina tried to catch the attention of her dad through the glass pane. She waved at him and shouted along till the time he managed to realise her presence at the pub.
'Imagine his shock at seeing his girl dressed up like this. He was in a meeting with his business associates and they all had a collective expression of disbelief on their faces. My dad just came out, spoke to me for a while, lent me some money for shopping and went back in. He was so sure that he didn't want a girl who may not have been underage but definitely looked like one get into his pub. For him, rules are rules,' she said.
After this, Celina walked into the nearest luxury mall for shopping.
'I made sure that I blew away all the money that I had laid my hands on. I wasn't allowed to get into the pub and I vowed to make up for that lost opportunity,' she said.
Directed by first timer Paritosh Painter and produced by Subhash Ghai, 'Paying Guest' also stars Shreyas Talpade, Ashish Chaudhary, Javed Jaffrey and Vatsal Sheth and Celina says: 'It was back to being school and eight of us were having a rollicking time.'
The film is ready and the release date would be announced after the stand off between producers and multiplexes is resolved.

Why did Asin say 'no' Asin says no to Akki!
If director Priyadarshan had had his way it would have been Asin in his latest venture, 'De Dana Dan', along with the likes of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal. But it was not slated to be so and hence a casting coup of sorts went a begging. So, what exactly went wrong?
Well, for that matter, nothing! And please do not jump to conclusions, the next southern 'superstarni' in the making, Asin, is not getting too carried away with the all time blockbuster success of her debut Hindi film, 'Ghajini', and has not rejected Priyan's offer for any controversial reason.
It's just that she simply stuck to her principal of accepting roles that are challenging and of some substance, one which offer her the scope to showcase her acting skills, and so she reluctantly refused Priyan's tempting offer.
Since the movie is basically an all male centric one, the role which Asin was offered was not exciting enough and it required Asin to be just a pretty face and add to the glamour quotient, which was not acceptable to the new sensation and hence the refusal. Asin also made it clear that she has no financial constraints and she makes enough bucks from the ads and endorsements.
