An interview with Sajid Nadiadwala

His family can easily be called one of the veterans in the trade. And he is the successful heir to hold the flag high for Nadiadwala Grandson and Entertainment. With a host of hits behind him, producer Sajid Nadiadwala is ready with one of the biggest and most anticipated films of not only his flourishing career but also one of the most awaited films of the year. As Nadiadwala gears up for his Hollywood-Bollywood multistarrer KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, he speaks to our correspondent on the film, Akshay Kumar, Sylvester Stallone and more.

This is one of the most awaited films this year and you must be excited?

Certainly, there is a great amount of excitement as the film nears its release. It is one of the biggest...probably the biggest film of my career and besides excitement there is a lot of expectations too attached with this film.

Certainly, it has some of the biggest Hollywood stars.

And some big Bollywood stars too. Akshay (Kumar) and Kareena (Kapoor), you cannot ignore them because KAMBAKKHT ISHQ has Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh. (Laughs). But certainly it is a dream come true for me that I have managed to rope in so many of them.

It must have been a great deal of hard work roping them in?

I won't say it was difficult but certainly we had to work a lot on it. As a producer I go all out to get the best for my film. It's the job of the scriptwriter to write but that doesn't mean my responsibility ends with financing the project. A producer has to be passionate about the project...the story and the cast... and I am one of those passionate people. When the script was written it had Hollywood at its backdrop and I was focused from the beginning that I need to rope in some of the biggest stars to give the film the required look and script the required strength.

After all, it must have been a great experience working with Sylvester Stallone.

(Pauses) Not only him but also with Denise and Brandon. Both are big and they need no introduction. But this experience is very hard to describe. This is what happens when you come across stars like them. There's a difference between 'growing up with stars' and growing up on stars'. I have grown up with stars. Many of the actors who have worked with me have been my friends, either in school or in college or even after that. Salman was my school friend and so on. But for that case Sylvester Stallone was my childhood idol...my rooms were full of his posters on the wall. I have grown up on Stallone and Denise Richards. That is where the difference lies.

So what was it that you said to Stallone when you met him for the first time?

(Laughs...and laughs). To be true and very honest...for the first few minutes I could not understand what to do. I stood there like a fan and didn't know what to do - ''Whether to sign for contract first or get his autograph first''.

Was it a conscious idea to make a film with Hollywood stars or it just happened?

These things don't happen just by chance. It's the story of a Hollywood stuntman played by Akshay and Kareena plays a top model. It's a romantic comedy set in Hollywood and we have shot almost the entire film in Universal Studios, Hollywood. We could have easily set Bollywood as the backdrop but I wanted to give the audience something that would be new and fresh. And that's how the entire project rolled out.

So, how big is the role of these actors or are they only cameos?

It's not at all special appearances or cameos. Denise has a full-fledged role, as she plays one of the love interests in Akshay's life. It's a love triangle between Akshay-Kareena-Denise. Stallone too has a lot of action scenes and some of the best dialogues in the film and Brandon was just superb. You need to watch the film to see them what they do.

Given that it's a big film and involves a lot of money why did you vest the responsibility on a newcomer director Sabbir Khan.

I have no problems with that. He has worked as an assistant director earlier and was great at his job. I have given opportunities to others too earlier. Sajid (Khan) was also a newcomer and he gave one of the biggest hits of the year with HEYY BABYY. JAAN-E-MAAN too was by newcomer Sirish Kunder.

Apparently, in fact you have also signed director Siddharth Anand for your next production.

(Smiles) Yes and I have full faith in him. His contract with Yash Raj is over and now he is directing one for me. In fact Sajid's next film HOUSEFULL too is about to begin and that too has a very interesting script.

But don't you think that with the on going problem between multiplexes and film producers the film might suffer?

See, I am one of those who are actively involved into this entire issue. I am standing by all my colleagues during this time. I support the entire decision of the producers. But at the same I am hopeful that it will be sorted out very soon. We have booked a May 29 release date and this issue will be sorted out much before that. It's all because of this present economic situation that such problems have crept up. So long people were happily paying the price of the tickets. Everyone is in a mood to save money for the future because it's uncertain. (Laughs). But I am sure it will get sorted out long before that.
