After ‘Slumdog’ is it ‘White Tiger’ for the west?
After the movie loosely based on Vikas Swarup’s new novel ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ impressed the world and swept the Oscars, looks like another Indian author’s book will be adapted soon.
This piece of news comes close on the heels of the stupendous success achieved by Mumbai-based rags to riches story that snatched 8 Oscar trophies and raked millions at the box office. We’re talking about Aravind Adiga’s recent Booker prize winner ‘The White Tiger’.
The buzz is that the producer of the Oscar nominated ‘The Revolutionary Road’ John Hart, has acquired the rights for the screen adaptation of the book that centres around the life of an ambitious rickshaw driver Balram Halwai.
Reports say that the film will be made under Hart’s newly formed production house Smuggler Films. It will be produced in association with Jolyon Symonds’ and Nicholas Greene’s Ascension
However, Hart has pointed out that his film would be different from Danny Boyle’s potboiler.
It’s been said: "While Slumdog paints a romantic portrait of the rising India, in which anyone can be a millionaire, The White Tiger suggests that to succeed, murder may be the only option. The project offers a decidedly darker message than Danny Boyle’s Best Picture winner.”
So there might be more India based glory on world stage in the days to come. Let’s wait and watch!

Watson says she will be 'uncontrollable' wreck when Potter comes to an end
Thursday Apr 23 2:20 PM
New Delhi, Apr 23 (ANI): British actress Emma Watson has revealed that she will be an "uncontrollable" wreck after the filming of 'Harry Potter' comes to an end.
Watson, 19, is devastated at the thought of not working with the cast and crewmembers of the hit franchise when shooting wraps next year, reports China Daily.
"I will be uncontrollable. It's been half of our lives. It's made us, it's formed us. It's such a big part of my life, so it will be really sad - and so much of the crew who have been there since the beginning are like my family," she said.
Though she has been working on the movies for over 10 years, Watson revealed that she does not socialise with her main co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint off set.
"To be honest, we see so much of each other when we're working that hanging out together would be overload. I love them, but I need to see other friends off set. They're like my siblings now," she said to Interview magazine.
"We will always be very important to each other. But, at the same time, after eight 'Harry Potter' films, we'll be ready to go and do other things, and be other people, and have time for ourselves," she added. (ANI)

Dil Raju to remake Akali Rajyam?
Noted producer Dil Raju right now seems to be in the remake mood. He is very interested in remaking yesteryear hits with new casts and crews. A couple of months ago, he announced he would be remaking the hit film Maro Charitra after making some essential changes to the script keeping in touch with the changing times. While there was no news about the progress of Maro Charitra, it is now being heard that he will be remaking Akali Rajyam, another hit from the past. Apparently, he wants to remake Akali Rajyam with the cast of the recent hit Happy Days. Although he is very much into this new project, he is also cautious. Sources suggest that Raju will attempt to remake Akali Rajyam only if the remake of Maro Charitra gets a positive response from the audience.

Kareena & Shahid in Love again says Saif Ali Khan
Kareena Kapoor and her ex-beau Shahid Kapur were a hit pair in 'Jab We Met' and the actress says they won't disappoint fans as an on-screen couple in their much delayed 'Milenge Milenge' either.
'I know people have expectations from us individually and as a pair. And they won't be disappointed. It's a very sweet film. And not dated at all though it got delayed. I'm as proud of 'Milenge Milenge' as I am of any of my films,' said Kareena, who is currently dating actor Saif Ali Khan.
The romantic comedy by director Satish Kaushik has been in the making since 2005. Defying all talk that she has been sidelining her only pending assignment with Shahid, Kareena said she had been running in and out of the studio to complete the dubbing before she leaves for a shoot in New York.
'We're all professionals here. For me it doesn't matter who the leading man in 'Milenge Milenge' is. For me what is important is that I made a commitment to two of my favourite people in the industry - producer Boney Kapoor and director Satish Kaushik - who've stood by me from the beginning of my career. How can I let them down? Boney wants a summer release for his film. I've to complete my dubbing before I leave,' said Kareena.
'I'm running in and out of two dubbing studios. I've already completed most of the dubbing,' she added.
'Milenge Milenge' is special because the former couple will be seen together after Imtiaz Ali's lovable 'Jab We Met' in 2007.

Katrina Kaif: 'Becoming a film star in India has been a dream come true'
London, Apr 22 (ANI): Born in Britain, speaks Hindi with an accent-Katrina Kaif is no close to the typical Bollywood actress but still she has made a mark in Indians' hearts.
The former model from Finchley, north London, Katrina arrived in Mumbai in 2003 and has played the lead in 10 films till date.
After a disastrous start with 'Boom', she went on to give a string of hit films and has created her own niche in Bollywood.
Earlier, she could not dance or sing and did not speak Hindi, but she reinvented herself to play girlfriends in commercial films.
"I'm the girl in the tank top and the short skirt who you could take home to meet your mother," The Telegraph quoted Katrina as saying.
She added: "Becoming a film star in India has been a dream come true but you do always have to put on a performance, so sometimes it is good to get away. That's when I head back to London. I can walk down Finchley High Street and no one recognises me. I certainly can't do that in Mumbai or Delhi."
But, after seven years of hard work she has no plans to leave it all behind to come back to Finchley.
However, she has said she would consider the right British or American project, if offered.
Recently, Katrina has been chosen as the face of India's first Barbie doll, which goes into production in September.
She said that she felt "honoured" to be chosen as the face of the doll, which marks Mattel Toys' 50th anniversary. (ANI)

An interview with Kamal Haasan
It's not always that superstar Kamaal Haasan talks about his personal choices. But he did this time, when he came to promote the Hindi version of his Tamil magnum opus DASAVATHARAM. In conversation with Kamaal Haasan.
DASAVATHARAM took one-and-a-half years to shoot and the Hindi version took almost one year to release. Is that what you call magnum opus?
(Laughs) You are right! See, a film like DASAVATHARAM is very difficult for me, especially when you are playing all 10 characters. It's like going back to a film school. We shot for 200 odd days, of which only 50 days I was a normal person. That is, 150 odd days of make-up, dialogues and acting. Trust me, it wasn't fun while it was now, but now seeing the audience reaction, I know, it was worthy. The Tamil version was released June 2008. At that time only we were ready with the Hindi version. But the delay in release was entirely the director's decision.
You have played two characters at the same time in HINDUSTANI and APPU RAJA. How was it playing 10 characters?
Ten times difficult! I wanted to do a remake of Sivaji sahab's (GANESAN) NAVARATRI, which was already done in Hindi by Haribhai (Sanjeev Kumar) as NAYA DIN NAYI RAAT, where they play nine characters at the same time. But then, thought why not make something new.
Of all the ten characters, which one is closest to your heart?
I love my 11th character...that's the role of screenwriter for this film.
You have Asin and Mallika Sherawat in the film. How was it working with them?
They have both done their parts. Asin is the heroine, Mallika has a small role in the film. But unfortunately, we were all so busy shooting that didn't even get time to enjoy their company like you are thinking.
What are your future projects?
I am planning to direct a film for my own company....I am writing the script at the moment. It will be released in Tamil and Hindi. As soon as I decide on the title and the cast, we will start shooting for it. Then, I am doing the Tamil and Telegu versions of A WEDNESDAY. While I will play the role of aam admi, Mohanlal, will play the role of the police commissioner.
What is a normal day in your life like?
There is no normal day in my life...either I am shooting, or promoting my film, or writing scripts...it's too busy to be called 'normal'.
Having such a busy life, how do you keep yourself going?
Well, never thought about that. But I guess that will be a long, long story.
What do you do when at home?
I am a complete movie buff and when I get a chance to stay at home I just watch films non-stop.
What kind of films you love to watch?
All kinds of films.
Are you a foodie?
Ji?
Do you love eating?
Yes...who doesn't? I enjoy any kind of well-cooked food.
Are there any unfulfilled desires?
Many...it will take an hour just to list them.
What is your opinion about the ongoing producers-multiplex debate?
I am not qualified enough to comment on that. As an actor, I only know about filmmaking and direction. But for the business part, I am not competent enough.
With the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, let's ask you a political question.
Sure...go ahead.
Will you join politics?
Never. I know politics just as much as you and other people of the country do. And before you ask, I won't even campaign for any party ever.
Are you expecting an Oscar for DASAVATHARAM like SLUMDOG MILLIONARE?
I am expecting none, because this is an Indian film and Oscars are awards given to American films.
So, you are expecting Indian awards?
I don't mind...there are ten characters in the film...at least one should be good enough for an award. (Laughs)
Your elder daughter Shruti is all set to debut in Hindi film LUCK. Does she take acting tips from you?
Shruti is a sensible girl and since childhood she does everything with a little bit of intelligence. I am sure she will apply this quality to her acting career as well.
